Product Description
A very inexpensive Truss Building STEM or STEAM activity. Students design bridges using straws and tape. Students are given design parameters. This activity promotes using the engineering design process. Civil engineering is also introduced. This activity can be used in math during a geometry unit or in physics during a forces unit. This unit has been done with very advanced 4th graders and can be used for higher grades. It is a stepping stone for students who design truss bridges in high school using the Engineering Encounters Bridge Contest (formerly known as the West Point Bridge Contest)

Included in this packet:

Teacher instructional sheet
Student instructional sheet and designing sheets
Reflection sheet
Engineering Process Poster
Two PowerPoints

The first PowerPoint introduces and explains truss bridges, includes a clip about a student studying civil engineering and introduces the design challenge. (11 pages)

The second PowerPoint discusses the forces, explains the design of the bridge and shows a clip of a female civil engineer describing the importance of collaboration and problem solving in her job. (9 pages)
