Three bestsellers with a water theme! These three STEM activities all have the same thing in common- water! Your students will love these- even if there are a few splashes. Materials are easy to gather and the Engineering Design Process will keep your groups on track. Get ready for Water Week!
What are the challenges?
The Build a Boat STEM Challenge is a runaway hit with my students. They cheer when they see Boats on our agenda and your students will too! There is just something about building that boat and holding your breath to see if it will float (it will) and then counting weights into it to see how long it will stay floating. It is total fun to watch their faces and hear the groans when a boat sinks or celebrate with them when the boat holds a lot of weight! This is a challenge you must try!
★You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes straws, masking, tape, craft foam, aluminum foil, waxed paper, plastic wrap, cups, water containers, weight (like pennies), and lots of paper towels!
This package specifically contains Background, Materials and Preparation page, 5 pages of Teacher’s Step-by-Step Procedures, Extension Page with ideas for more activities, 3 pages of photos, Constraints of the Task page, Pricing list for the budget feature, Cost sheet for students to use, 3 versions of a lab sheet- one with sample student answers, Scoring Rubrics, and Editable Forms.
Splash! It’s time for a Water Slide Challenge! In this challenge, students will be using materials to plan a design and then construct a working water slide that will transport a toy figure down the slide- without leaking water. The main materials for the slide part are not waterproof so students will have to plan ahead for how to line their slide so it won’t spill water. The slide must also resemble a slide, have a turn in it, and have an access point- like a ladder. Students will use the steps of the Engineering Design Process as you follow the pages of detailed and labeled teacher directions pages.
★You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes Straws, Pipe cleaners, Aluminum foil, Plastic wrap, Waxed paper, Bowls, Masking tape, Cardboard tubes, Paper towels, Cups, and Toy Figures.
The package specifically includes Teacher background, Materials and preparation page, 4 pages of teacher directions, Constraints list, 4 pages of photographs, Extra Hints page, Student lab sheet –with sample answers, Editable Forms, and Scoring rubric.
Are you ready for the Water Tower Challenge? We added a couple of twists to this one! An object must be held aloft and students use a budget! And there might be splashing!
This challenge is to build a tower that will hold a cup of water aloft. The tower must be a specific height and the water container must rest at the top, but unrestrained. When the tower is stable, water is added and the tower must remain standing for a specified amount of time.
★You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes Straws, Masking tape, Craft foam sheets, Craft sticks, Dowel sticks (3/16 inch diameter and 12 inches long), Small plastic containers, Water, and a measuring cup for 50 mL.
The package specifically contains a Cover sheet, Teacher Background,
1-page Materials and Prep list, 5 pages of Teacher directions with helpful hints, 2 full pages of the task constraints, Lab Sheet in two versions, Cost sheet for student planning, Price List for the student budgeting feature, 5 pages of Tower Photos with more details, Scoring rubric, and Editable form file.
