Peter Pan and STEM???? Who knew that the classics were jam-packed with engineering potential?!? Stories can serve to encourage students to begin to problem solve, generate design proposals, and make connections to engineering. Literature is an area of the curriculum that all elementary teachers are familiar with and the engineering design process can be integrated into the lesson without it being an “add-on” to an already crowded curriculum. Peter Pan and zip wires provide a great combination for an integrated unit that your students will enjoy as they investigate force, motion, gravity, and acceleration.
We have more literature and STEM lessons that includes fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and classics. For example…The Wizard of Oz has lots of STEM potential! Get Caught Engineering with the Wizard of Oz : Tornados and Structures
