Have your students engineer behavioral adaptations for an animal they invent. This integrated unit complements our popular STEM and Animal Physical Adaptation packet. It provides a great way to integrate engineering into a unit on animal behavioral adaptations, biology, and nature studies. This activity was used as part of our “ Get Caught Engineering - Is It in Your Nature?” family workshop at the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum.
Teacher notes, student guide, four behavioral adaptations information cards (vocalization, migration, protection behavior, and herd behavior), inquiry questions, group role cards, vocabulary list, rubric, poster, and a list of easy to find materials are all provided for you. This STEM activity is a fun hands-on lesson that can be used to review and apply concepts from a teacher’s previously taught lesson on animal adaptations and habitats.
Check out our other popular unit on this topic that focuses on physical adaptations. Teachers have been delighted with the enrichment it provides to their science unit.
“As a STEAM school that is using the Engineering Design Process, this was a great resource for me to use in our Life Science Unit. The kids had a great time creating their animals.”
“This project was awesome! Allowed my students to use creativity to demonstrate their understanding of Adaptations! Very engaging activity!”
