Space Exploration STEM Activity
1990’s Decade – The Hubble Space Telescope
Have your students read and discuss background information on the 1990’s Decade Hubble Space Telescope and engineer a prototype for a telescope. Students will apply the engineering design process as they work on this interesting space related challenge. Included in the packet are background information and resources, teacher notes, inquiry questions, student role cards, student handouts for a STEM activity, the engineering design process poster, and a rubric.
NOTE: This activity requires the purchase of convex lenses. Online sources for the lenses (such as Science Stuff -http://www.sciencestuff.com) are listed in the teacher notes. Lenses average $2.50- $3.00 per lens. You might also consider borrowing lenses from your local high school physic class.
The past 70 years of space exploration is filled with amazing events. Increase your students’ appreciation of the accomplishments in space exploration by reviewing each decade’s achievements and doing a related STEM activity. We will be adding a separate activity packet for each decade. Follow our store to be notified when each is added.
