Welcome to STEM For Young Learners – Sugar. Designed for teachers, students and parents, these STEM lessons integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for grades K – 2. Using food-themed lessons as a springboard and the maker movement for inspiration, students develop higher-order thinking, problem-solving and communication skills. Incorporated into the Sugar theme is a scientific exploration to find the effect that different temperatures of water have on the rate in which the sugar cubes dissolve. Also included is a technology lesson in which students create an adjective poem slide show using presentation software, an engineering lesson in which students build the strongest sugar cube arch they can with sugar cubes and glue and a math lesson where students compare how the measurable amount of sugar in a glass of one cup of unsweetened lemon juice affects the taste. They describe the difference.
