This download contains everything for a thematic unit on matter, including explicit instructions and lesson plans for each activity, printables, handouts, and book list. The unit is designed so you can select the activities you wish to complete, therefore tailoring the length of the unit to the needs of your students.
In this unit, students will learn that matter is classified into three states, solid, liquid, and gas. Students will conduct experiments to gain an understanding of the physical properties of matter and the process of scientific inquiry. Students will describe the water cycle both orally and in writing.
Grade Level: Elementary (3rd - 5th)
ESL Level: Advanced Beginning - Intermediate

• Goal 2, Standard 1 To use English to achieve academically in the content area of science: Students will use English to understand demonstrations, follow directions for experiments, and work with a partner.
• Goal 2, Standard 2 To use English to achieve academically in the content area of science: Students will use English to obtain, process, construct, and provide scientific information in spoken and written form, understanding graphics, describing observations, and participating in class discussions.
• Goal 2, Standard 3 To use English to achieve academically in the content area of science: Students will use appropriate learning strategies to construct and apply academic knowledge, classifying, taking notes, using reference materials, and following the steps of the scientific method.
This unit was initially developed for ESOL with Korean students in Korea, which is why many of the examples draw from the Korean culture and/or city sights. This unit could also be used with virtually any student in grades 3-8.
