This close-reading and note-taking activity was designed for AP English Language and Composition, but can be effective in any high school level Language Arts class. It asks students to consider specific elements of the rhetorical situation of a non-fiction text in order to fully analyze the text according to author, audience, context, and rhetorical strategy.

This resource was created after I had used similar mnemonic devices for text preparation with AP Lang and ran into obstacles with them. The main omissions in other mnemonic devices for AP Lang STITCHPREP addresses are:

1. Audience: my students consistently said the audience was "for anyone interested in the topic." I had to push them consistently to consider the differences between implied and target audience, so STITCHPREP separates audience into those categories.

2. Even when "appeals" was separated from "strategies," my students consistently placed appeals in the strategies category, thus never actually analyzing more challenging strategies like diction and syntax. This version separates the two, asks for specifically at least four examples of strategies and two examples of appeals, and explicitly asks students not to name appeals in the strategies category.

3. I also struggled to get students to identify context, so I split that up into two categories as well: current and historical. This forces the students to not only consider the time of writing and/or the time audiences access the text, but also what happened previous to writing that offered historical context for the author. I specifically ask for two examples.

4. Per the new AP Lang curriculum, exigence has been added.
