General music teachers, have you ever had your students watch "STOMP" and thought about incorporating it into your curriculum?
Here is a composition project that teaches form (call & response), the creative process (composition & revision), and has students perform their own creative work. You can use standard notation or just write out the words to represent what you are doing, and students will learn rhythm without even realizing it.
In this project, students watch STOMP's "Just Clap Your Hands", and create a call & response form composition that is identical in form to a section of the STOMP performance. Students learn about timbre, beat, rhythm, and form throughout the creative process.
It takes my 6th graders 3-4 weeks of daily project work to complete this unit (I do teach in a very low school district, so keep that in mind).
