Are you needing a fun way to engage your middle to upper elementary music students during the slump of the mid part of the school year? Are the winter blues setting in? Is the snow preventing your students from getting outside for recess to run off the crazies? Then this activity and lesson is definitely the answer to what you are looking for!!! This SMART NOTEBOOK lesson highlights the professional performing group of non-traditional percussion music, STOMP, while also focusing on how to help with environmental issues and saving the Earth. The students will be able to recognize everyday objects used in creating non-traditional music. Additional enrichment activities are included in the lesson such as classifying infinitely cloned picture icons representing recycled materials into appropriate categories, identifying & discussing vocabulary terms that deal with what it means to work as a "team" like the STOMP cast, etc. This particular lesson/unit has many opportunities for growth, expansion, and exploration depending on how far the teacher wants to pursue and explore with their students. After I have presented this unit, my students/classes have typically taken on the task of composing their own compositions, selecting and/or building their own recycled instruments to use in their pieces, and then after several days/weeks of preparation, they perform their compositions. This particular unit truly ends up being a highlight of their school year.
If you do not have a Smart Board or access to SMART NOTEBOOK software, no worries!! A POWER-POINT Edition of this lesson is also available for sale in my store. Click link below!!
