STORY OF US HEARTLAND EP. 6

UPDATE: I added the History Channel guide to this. It just makes things a bit easier when trying to use and show these videos in class. I like lots of options and this is another option.

I show this at the end of each unit while teaching US history. The students really pay attention and I think it makes everything more visual.

I like this series and have developed some study guides that go with each of the 45 minute videos. The videos were free on YouTube as I now show them off of Amazon Prime/Netflix. If you do not like Amazon prime then you can buy them off of Apple or look for them cheap on eBay.

There are 6 PAGES for episode 6.

1. SHORT VIDEO GUIDE: I use 5 vocabulary words to help students remember what they are watching. This is the easy version.

2. LONG VIDEO GUIDE: I use 10 questions to help students remember what they are watching as well as draw on current topics today. This is the regular version.

3. THREE DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: I have included 3 discussion questions to extend the discussion.

4. ESSAY QUESTION: I have also included an essay question with my paragraph sheet to have the students write about what they watched.

5. MINI QUIZ: I require my students to pay attention and the best way to do that is to make sure they know there will be a quiz if any heads go down or eyes are closed. This is a 3 question quiz with a bonus question.

Episode #5: Heartland

In 1869, the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of America, more than two
thousand miles apart, are linked by continuous metal rails. The
Transcontinental Railroad – the world’s first – is one of the most
ambitious human enterprises since the Great Wall of China, and
much of it is built by Chinese laborers who immigrate to the U.S.
in search of work and the promises of prosperity.

The railroad doesn’t just change the lives of Americans, it alters the
entire ecology of the continent – and there are enormous casualties
that result from this massive and transformative project. The vast
Plains, where buffalo and Native Americans roam, become home to
farmers who build houses of grass, and cowboys who trail their cattle
thousands of miles to the railheads. Steel roads and now steel wire
fences parcel up the Plains.
