PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

STORY TIME SCAVENGER HUNT is a fun way to help emergent readers begin to interact with text even if they can’t read a single word! During either a read aloud or shared read, either the teacher or the students can identify a person, place or thing found in the story AND listed on the scavenger hunt. During the shared read, the teacher can direct students to find the word or illustration on their scavenger hunt sheet, and simply check it off. Another variation is to have students circle the word, or color the illustration, or all three!

This has been a huge hit in my class, and it’s a great way to get our emergent readers interacting with their books, as opposed to passively listening to a read aloud. I hope your class likes it as much as mine does!

Included are:

1. “STORY TIME” HUNT
Created to be used as a teacher led activity, during a read aloud.

2. “LET’S READ” HUNT
Created for students who are familiar enough with the hunt to use as they “read” their picture books independently.

3. “READ! READ! READ!”
Created for students to use while reading independently. Students choose 5 items to write, draw, and check off on their own checklist as they “read.”

Readers “hunt” through their books for:

Characters (boy, girl, king, queen, etc)
Clothing (shirt, pants, sneakers, etc.)
Nature (tree, flower, sun, moon, etc.)
Household items (chair, window, lamp, etc.)
Animals (dog, fish, owl, horse, etc.)
Transportation (car, bus, train, etc.)
Toys (skateboard, bicycle, doll, ball, etc.)
Fantasy (king, crown, magic wand, etc.)

Please see the preview for a sampling of this product. All materials were created in black and white for easy printing.

NOTE: I choose to limit the number of pages I give my students. Depending on what we’re reading, I will always clip the cover page to their clipboards (if we’re reading on the rug), and then clip 2 or 3 more pages. There are a total of 7 pages, and 43 items on the “hunt.” The cover pages are different, but the remaining pages can be used for both hunts.
