The Project is set around the theme of genetics, molecular science, chemistry and super heroes, with much of the emphasis placed on the Structure and properties of matter PS1.A. Your students are provided with the scenario in which the President has commissioned Professor M. Xavier, to open a new genetic research facility, dedicated to exploring and developing new mutant genes, via chemical processes, to produce a mutant super hero that is fused to an element of the periodic table, which possess the chemical and physical properties of that particular element.
The students in your class have been selected to apply for the position at the Xavier Institute for Genetics and Molecular Science. They will be required to complete the project booklet, which will help them develop their knowledge of the periodic table, molecular science and atomic structures, and prepare them for a formal presentation in front of a panel of judges, who will decide whether each candidate has what it takes to join Professor M. Xavier, and his team of top geneticists and chemical engineers from around the world, in developing the ultimate Super Hero, which will help serve and protect the future of all human mankind.
The project will prompt students to develop and tune their knowledge of the period table, atomic structure, the physical and chemical properties of elements, the molecular structure of substances and the effects of energy on the structure of matter , so that they may apply it to a real life scenario in which they will interview for a position at The Xavier Institute Lab for Genetics.
The final outcome for this project will consist of a completed packet, a 3D model of an atom, and a parent showcase or online gallery, which allows students to present their work to a public audience.
