I developed this program over 20 years ago when I taught 26 students from 5 to 12 years of age. Teaching in that context forced me to rethink my management style and I combined all addition skills across the grades into 28 steps. I refined this sequence over the years through experience and now it consists of 20 steps, increasing in difficulty until students master the entire sequence.
The program is being used as an INTERVENTION but it has application to whole class in the following way. Administer the PRETEST to all your students at the beginning of the year. You will identify who needs extra scaffolding as well as those students who you will need to extend. Place all students on the CLASS OVERVIEW (included). Students can track their own progress if you enlarge it.
You then manage your time according to who needs you the most and when. Put the TASK CARDS in a MATHS CENTRE and your high flyers can access them there for CONSOLIDATION.
Administer my SLAM DUNK ADDITION at the same time and your management system will address both programs and keep students progressing regularly through the year.
I use games to help students learn the number facts they need as well as place value concepts which all go hand-in-hand at this stage of learning. Playing a short addition or subtraction game at the beginning or end of an intervention session provides the repetition as well as fun that some students need to learn their number factts.
