WHAT IS A NUMBER BOND?
IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION AT PRIMARY SCHOOL LEVEL, A NUMBER BOND (SOMETIMES ALTERNATIVELY CALLED AN ADDITION FACT) IS A SIMPLE ADDITION SUM WHICH HAS BECOME SO FAMILIAR THAT A CHILD CAN RECOGNISE IT AND COMPLETE IT ALMOST INSTANTLY, WITH RECALL AS AUTOMATIC AS THAT OF AN ENTRY FROM A MULTIPLICATION TABLE IN MULTIPLICATION
WHAT IS A REKENREK?
THE REKENREK WAS DESIGNED BY ADRIAN TREFFERS, A MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM RESEARCHER AT THE FREUDENTHAL INSTITUTE IN HOLLAND, TO SUPPORT THE NATURAL DEVELOPMENT OF NUMBER SENSE IN CHILDREN. SMALLER VERSIONS CONSIST OF TWO ROWS OF 10 BEADS. ... THIS ALLOWS STUDENTS TO MAKE MENTAL IMAGES OF NUMBERS.
This set includes number bonds that are paired with a rekrenek image that shows the basic fact. Each of the two parts is represented with a NUMBER BOND image (numbers 1-9) and you have to figure out how many all together or the whole. The rekenrek image helps bridge the gap between concrete, pictorial and abstract as students work to be fluent with their facts. Students can practice strategy use with these such as make a ten/decompose ten, counting on/counting back, doubles/halves, and near doubles/near halves.
Included in this set are cards with all addends from 0-19 with sums to 20. That is over 100 cards!
