My e-book SUPERHERO is a tween-targeted story that examines male body image, bullying, acceptance, and belonging. At the heart of my story is 13 year old Gabriel, a Greek god who has amazing gifts and abilities, but is the smallest boy in his school. Because of his "vulnerable" and unmanly exterior, he feels inadequate, endures bullying, and has to fight for acceptance. This document gives teachers background on my inspiration for the story.
Along with this information sheet, I also created lessons to compliment SUPERHERO. In the bundle are pre-reading activities, Greek God/Goddess information and comparison, activities that examine men in the media, and 6th grade common core questions.
** PLEASE NOTE: The common core questions are higher order thinking questions, that might require more explanation from the teacher. For instance, some students might struggle with understanding what inferences, point of view, and themes are. As SUPERHERO is a fairly easy read, the questions can be used to elicit deep thinking and conversation.
