Are you currently reading or planning to read the novel "Sadako And The Thousand Paper Planes?" This lovely and sad story helped my ELL students to develop their English skills as well as gaining empathy for the main protagonist - Sadako. In this resource, I designed tasks with a language focus on chapter one paired with exciting online web 2.0 tools.
Handout #1: Language Focus: Adverb of Manners.
Students are "detectives" and need to find out all sentences that include -ly words. There are quite a lot of them! Once they understand how adverbs are used in a sentence, they are expected to write their own sentences using adverbs.
Handout #2: Language Focus: Reading Comprehension
Students will create a family tree of Sadako's family by designing avatars online (no sign-up required). These avatars will be copy and pasted on Google docs and arranged in a family tree. Ss also have to provide a short description about each family member. This is the perfect way to show their reading comprehension.
Handout #3: Language Focus: Compare and Contrast
Ss. will be comparing Sadako's Morning Routine with their own by creating a venn diagram using an ready to use online tool (no sign-up required!). With that venn diagram, teach ss basic conjunctions to connect routines that are similar/different to theirs in full-complete sentences.
