Whole Group Games/Activities

  • For a write-the-room activity, display cards on walls around the room, attached to chair backs, or scattered on the floor. Students use the included recording sheets to move around the room and copy the patterns matching the safari characters on their recording sheet.
  • For aural skills practice, game or assessment, teachers may chant patterns with rhythm solfege, numbers, or neutral syllables. Additionally, patterns may be played on a rhythm instrument.
  • Students may echo patterns before identifying the notation. Play the aural skills game as a whole group with the game slide displayed, or print the pattern cards and display them on walls or hide them around the room to simulate a real safari.
  • Aural Skills Assessment can be accomplished by giving students individual turns in the group game, or by printing the Show What You Know assessment sheet.

Music Center Activities

  • Center Game #1 Write the Room – Place 4 rhythm pattern cards (half-page or quarter-page patterns for printing) and the matching Write the Room worksheet at each center. Students copy the rhythm patterns in the box with the matching picture.
  • Center Game #2 Rhythm Composing Place a set of the small rhythm pattern cards and copies of the Rhythm Composition worksheet at each center. Students choose 4 patterns to create a rhythm composition. This could be completed as a group or as individuals. Encourage students to perform their compositions using rhythm syllables, body percussion, or classroom instruments.
