This year we implemented a Safe place in the classroom. It gives students the opportunity to calm down if they are experiencing feelings such as frustration, anger, sadness, anxiety, etc. So far, our students have absolutely loved the SAFE place. We make sure to make a cozy place, near our teacher's desk, so that they can be calm near us.
There are 4 steps in the Calm down posters:
1. Find a comfy seat.
2. Pick a calm down tool.
3. Set the timer.
4. Go back to work!
Emotional wellbeing is crucial in a classroom, for learners and for teachers. Students can learn that when they are not feeling well, they can choose to go there to help calm down. We have a Calm Down toolbox where students can choose the materials they want to use, they set the sand clock (which is for 5 minutes) and clean up when it finishes. It's important to set the limits and guide them through the use of the SAFE place.
