Students will study what causes these disasters and how to stay safe during them: Blackouts, Droughts, Earthquakes, Extreme Heat, Floods, Home Fires, Hurricanes, Landslides, Space Weather, Thunderstorms, Tornadoes, Tsunamis, Volcanoes, Winter Storms and Wild Fires. I use this unit as a self-directed unit with my high school SPED students. It is a 6th grade reading level and could easily be used for a middle or high school safety unit or as a supplement to a science unit on natural disasters. This unit contains: 15 fact sheets (one for each natural disaster studied), one student hand-out packet that has questions for each of the fact sheet, 3 quizzes, lists of words for note cards, 3 research projects with rubric, an evacuation plan and safety kit checklist, answer keys and notes for the teacher on them all. I allow 6 weeks for this unit but it could be modified easily into a 3 week unit for a regular classroom. My students enjoy this because they can self-pace through it and really enjoy researching the natural disasters.
