My students know I love to learn and love to play games with them, but we always agree we will be on task (while having fun) in our learning. I end all my "game play" at my teacher table with reminding the group of our I CAN STATEMENT and require their choral repeating of the statement.
I am always wondering what my students tell their parents when they go home and talk about their school day. Sometimes I think they inform their parents that we play games all day - which isn't too far from the truth, but all my games are purposeful and I hope some of the I CAN STATEMENT makes it to the parents' ears!
If you have visited my TPT store - you are well aware of my love for Go Fish, but this is because it is a simple game that my students love. It allows them to interact with one another by asking for cards and requiring them to have 4 of a kind instead of 2 prolongs the practice.
One day a week, I play a game of some type with my Guided Reading groups, but they might be practicing different skills so I have found playing Go Fish or Match (with my various Go Fish decks) helps alleviate any hurt feelings across my ability groups.
Sorry for the lengthy description - I often find myself giving this same speech to multiple people, strangers even! Learning should be fun and purposeful.
In this deck of Go Fish cards the following synonyms are included:
These synonyms are just a few, but easier to model with students and are found quite often in picture books, chapter books, and Guided Reading books.
Each card also has the corresponding punctuation mark to expose students to them frequently in hopes of assisting them when we pull this knowledge into Writer's Workshop pieces.
These cards have also been used by students in our Writer's Workshop after I have spent focus lessons on this skill. Copying these cards, laminated, hole-punching, and placing on a ring for each table or desk grouping has helped my students when editing their pieces.
I have included a student direction sheet as well, but don't feel you have to use it.
Thanks for visiting my TPT store and I hope you take some time to check out my other products. Following my store will ensure you receive notes about sales that may not be reflected on my store, but simply a price drop for a limited time!
