Just in time for “Le Jour de Sainte Barbe” on December 4! This is a 2-part explanation of St. Barbara’s Day written entirely in English. Part 1 tells the tale of Saint Barbara. Part 2 explains the tradition of Saint Barbara’s Day in France. It can be used for any level of French. For a version written with a little French in it, try my other product called “Saint Barbara’s Day (en français)”. I have used this very successfully along with an activity where the students plant their own wheat seeds in tiny paper or plastic cups, using a few cotton balls for “soil”. The cups are put on the window sill in my classroom, and students are responsible for keeping them watered. The day they leave for Winter Break, I hand out ribbon for them to tie around their cups, and the cups of sprouted wheat go home with them. This activity is always a big hit!
