This assignment features an excerpt from Saints at the River by Ron Rash. Students will use the excerpt to respond to ten multiple-choice questions and one constructed-response question.
I would recommend having students complete this assignment after reading chapter six of the novel, but this can technically be completed as a stand-alone activity if the teacher wants to use it exclusively as exam prep.
The multiple-choice questions are higher-level thinking questions, asking students to analyze figurative language, point of view, conflict, etcetera.
The constructed-response question requires students to provide at least two pieces of textual evidence to explain how the photograph described in the excerpt will ultimately help Herb Kowalsky.
An answer key and rubric are provided.
