First Strokes Multi-sensory Handwriting Program - Single User Digital Copy

by Jan McCleskey, MA, OTR - The Handwriting Clinic/ The Fine Motor Store.

Research based handwriting program! Designed by an occupational therapist who owns The Handwriting Clinic. Used in schools and therapy clinics since 2005. Now selling digital copies of this comprehensive handwriting program on TPT. Single license for one user to make multiple copies for use. There is also a building/site digital copy/license for all individuals within a facility to make multiple copies - separate purchase from The Fine Motor Store.

This program has been used in schools as site licenses from The Handwriting Clinic. Now that it is available as a digital download for the first time ever, you will not find a more comprehensive handwriting program for the price! Tired of purchasing handwriting workbooks and expensive training modules? This single copy license will allow you to print workbooks for your own use for years! The best part of this program, is that it is not just workbooks!

Instructors manual: How to Use the First Strokes Program - The instructors manual is a training program for multi sensory handwriting techniques, with reference pages, printables and training for how to use the program. Perfect for inservices for your school or clinic, and perfect to teach HOW to teach handwriting! Do your students struggle with letter formation and sequencing the letters in the correct pattern? This manual has many techniques for FUN ways of working on patterning through large motor, medium motor and small motor activities.

Modules - the program is broken up into training modules to teach letters within letter groups categories by the "First Stroke". The module file has introduction pages for each module with stroke group and letter practice. Each module also has a fine motor warm up for pencil control. If you want more information on developing grasp on a pencil, please download the featured freebie in The Fine Motor Store - Developing a Fine Motor Program for Classroom or Therapy.

Workbooks - the program has two workbooks - a lower case workbook and an upper case workbook. It is recommended that letters be taught categories by the "First Stroke" to get motor patterning of the letters. For example, in the lower case program, just by teaching a circle stroke, short line down, and a tall line down, those are the "First Strokes" for the first 17 letters of the alphabet! (o a d g q c, i r n m p j, l t h b k)!

A big part of the program is teaching children to write on three lined paper so that children can learn sizing and spacing concepts. Handwriting readiness suggests that children are more ready with fine and visual motor skills around age 6. Of course handwriting is taught to 4 and 5 year olds in recent years. The First Strokes Program is simplified with very short verbal cueing methods, motoric practice of letters and visual memory techniques. This program has been used for pre-k through kindergarten (advanced workbooks available for late kindergarten/1st grade) with success! See preview for the research!

Reversal files - Brain Break for the Classroom - this file is perfect for a powerpoint activity or for printable flashcards. It works with children on cueing techniques for common reversals of b, d, g, j, q, p, s, e, z. It also includes printable pencil toppers and desk cue cards! By going over the powerpoint or flashcards while students write the letters in the air, students get a head start of not making letter reversals! This file, combined with multi-sensory work within teaching the letters by the "First Stroke", significantly helps prevent letter reversals in the first place! The Fine Motor Store also has the Stop Letter Reversals and the Stop Number Reversals programs, if your need more printable worksheets for students who need more work. At The Handwriting Clinic, we primarily use the Brain Break file that is included in this download, to work on remedial or preventative work on reversals - with very nice success!

Homework files - this is another separate workbook! It includes printable pages for each letter within modules, as well as multi sensory work for parents to work on with their child after each letter group! It includes multi sensory practice to work on patterning letters. While it does have printable small motor work pages, it mostly instructs parents to sing the "First Stroke" of the letters, and to have the child practice the motoric patterning of letters in fun ways (in the air, on a printable "scribble sheet", etc).

Grading rubrics - this will allow an educator to test sequencing and knowledge of the letters in the program to take data on each student if desired. It is important to know which letters students form incorrectly, so that students can have more practice to form correctly. Once letters become sequenced incorrectly as a motoric habit, it is very difficult to change! Therefore, this program works to prevent incorrect sequencing!

This First Strokes Multi-sensory Handwriting Program file is comprehensive! It is targeted for pre-k through kindergarten. The Fine Motor Store sells a preschool workbook/program for younger students, as well as an advanced print workbook/program for students who may be towards the end of kindergarten/1st grade. For older students, it is very difficult to change sequencing or patterning of letters. Therefore, for 2nd -5th grade, First Strokes/The Handwriting Clinic sells the Print Legibility Workbook on The Fine Motor Store. All workbooks are available as a single or as a building license.
