Salón de Corro – based off the game Parker Brothers PIT
There are 6 sets included in this download. Copying the cards front and back will allow for easy set return if one is left on the floor after classes have left. Copying the cards in color makes it easier for students to recognize and group the cards. For more of a challenge, copy the cards in black and white only.
Both PDFs of each set and editable .docx are included.
OBJECT OF THE GAME:
The object of Salón de Corro is to ‘corner the market’ on the Irregular Present Tense Verbs: Hacer, Venir, Poner, Dar, Venir, Caer, Traer and Salir by trading cards with other players. This game is best played with the maximum amount of players possible, which is 8. There are 6 cards in each suit – one for each subject pronoun grouping. If five play, use only five complete verb sets. If six play, use six verb suits, etc. For example, if six players are playing, take out all cards from two verbs sets. Use the complete deck for eight players.
HOW TO PLAY:
Select one player to shuffle the deck and deal out six cards to each player. The Dealer should allow the players 30 seconds to sort their cards and decide mentally on which verb (Hacer, Poner, Dar. etc.) they will attempt to get all of.
Players should try to collect the verb of which they hold the most cards. When the cards have been sorted. the Dealer slaps the table / desk and announces, “Abierto – ¡Vámonos! Then, any player may begin to trade cards with other players. Trading is not by turn, it occurs at the same time (it can get a little rowdy, but that part of the fun of it!)
To trade, the player takes from his hand one to five cards of the same verb (must be the same verb), holds the cards up so that the verbs do not show and calls out, “¡Uno, uno, uno!!” or “!Dos, dos, dos!”, etc. depending on the number of cards being traded. Players continue calling out their numbers until the cards have been exchanged. If a player wishes to exchange cards with another player, he must call in return, “¡Uno, uno, uno!!” or “!Dos, dos, dos!”, etc. and trade an equal number of cards of the same verb with that player. If a player wishes to trade three or four cards and other players will only exchange lower numbers, he may drop his bid and trade the smaller number of cards.
Trading continues until one player gets six cards of the same verb. That player must quickly slap the table and yell, “¡Cerrado – yo gané!. Players can quickly discuss and show everyone their cards and then the cards should be put back as a deck, shuffled and then can be played again. Dealer may switch between games if the group prefers.
