Persistence of Memory, 1931, oil on canvas.
- Time is fluid which is why Dalí used melting watches as his imagery. Memory needs both a present and past tense in order to persist through time.
- Critics thought the painting was a visualization of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Universally agreed that it is the most famous painting of Salvador Dali AND the most renowned artwork in Surrealism.
- Dalí used the surrealist perception of Camembert cheese melting in the sun for his watches.
- Both hard and soft objects are used as part of Dalí’s flipping reality.
- Entities have characteristics other than the ones attributed to them. This mirrors the quality of dreams.
- Dalí was interested in putrefaction and decay. The ants pursue that organic process in the painting.
- The melting flesh at the center is a self-portrait of Dalí.
- Dalí’s painting dealt with his own immortality set in the terrain of his Catalonian home.

- the skull is seven nude female models. The way optics and visual perception work, the eye will see it is a skull OR as nude women. Our brains will not take in both visual perceptions at once.
- Dali himself sits in the foreground in formal evening clothes. Dalí sketched the proposed photograph. Photographer Philippe Halsman needed three hours to realize Dalí’s image from the sketch.
- Dalí commented on the Death aspect, "I value death greatly. After eroticism, it's the subject that interests me the most."
- Dalí and Halsman worked together for 37 years. They also created the photograph on the next slide, Dalí Atomicus (1948) Gelatin silver print.
