Product Description
Visual discrimination is part of phonological awareness. It is the ability to see differences in shapes, lines, sizes, colors and form. Students need to fine tune their visual discrimination skills in order to discriminate between letters, numbers and words. (e.g. b d p q ; h n r ; ban - and)

Visual Discrimination: Sea Creatures | Print | Grades PreK-1

(14 creatures x 8 colors)

ACTIVITIES
• Use visual discrimination skills to sort the sea creatures by color, shape, size, direction, or other common features.
• Begin with teacher-directed tasks, or class demonstrations when learning how to sort. (Use one attribute, i.e. color or shape for an initial sort. Then add a second attribute, color and shape, etc.)
• Invite the children to play with the material, and think of their own sorting rule. Be aware of individual differences. Support and encourage the learning. After the sort ask, “What is your sorting rule?” Invite them to share their reasoning, “Tell me why this sea creature is here.” “Why did you use the octopus?” Encourage them to “think about their thinking.” Take opportunities to extend the learning.

CREATE AND EXTEND PATTERNS! (Use sentence strips to provide a visual line for the sequence.) i.e.
• a b a b a b
• aa bb aa bb aa bb
• abc abc abcabc
• abbc abbc abbc
• aabbc aabbc aabbc

OPTIONAL PRINTING
1. Copy one-sided onto cover stock. Copying all of the pages provides “the direction the sea creature is facing” (for all sea creatures) as a sorting rule, and two sea creatures of each color. (p. 4- 17)
• If desired, there is a blue backing sheet provided. (p. 18)
2. Copy alternate pages , (p. 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) to provide one copy of each sea creature in 8 colors.
• If desired, there is a blue backing sheet provided. (p. 18)
3. My favorite: * Copy double-sided, (p. 4-17) flip on the long edge, to “mix-it-up” a bit. The same sea creature will be on the back of the card… in the same color, but facing a different direction.
• For better durability, laminate the cards before you cut them apart.

SORTING TRAYS
• Use some of the 8 sorting circles provided.
• Use divided trays from the dollar store.
Paper plates and hula-hoops make good sorting rings.
• As the children gain skills, add a Venn diagram.

Mathematical concepts and language learning… they all overlap!
A great resource for early learners!

Have a great day!
