Product Description
Whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s some value in learning the rules before you break them. Introduce students to the five paragraph essay structure with this fun lesson and example essay.

I elicited the “Whoa, dude!” response by first telling students that we were going to read a five paragraph essay… about five paragraph essays… written in perfect five paragraph essay form. (Insert my students’ sarcastic “mind-blown” faces here.)

Then, we read the sample essay as a mentor text and annotated it together to define what the structure IS; next, we used the discussion questions to examine whether or not we thought this was a well-organized essay. Finally, we discussed whether or not we agreed with the author’s argumentative stance that the five paragraph essay structure is important to learn.

Use this as an introductory lesson to some of the structure-based CCSS Writing standards, including introductions (W.1a), transitions (W.1c), and conclusions (W.1e); this lesson uses an argumentative essay as the mentor text, but can be applied to informative essay writing also.

(After this lesson, I immediately launched into the actual essay assignment that we were about to commence, going over the directions, rubric, and a student example from last year. Feel free to use this lesson as a springboard into your own assessment or unit as well!)

This 6-page download includes:
• the mentor text (sample essay) that is ready-to-print for students (3 pages), and
• an answer key that shows some of my annotations and how we answered the two discussion questions.
