This is an introductory activity on sample spaces. After discussing what sample spaces are and how they are used, students will then complete the guided practice on creating a sample space. Give student the tree diagram sheets and the picture items sheet. This activity is easily differentiated. For your lower students give them 2 copies of the tree diagram with the clue words as to what goes in each box. For at level students give them one copy with the clue words and one without. For advanced students you can either give them one diagram with clue words for practice and they make the second diagram on their own, or give them the diagram without clue words and they make their own on the second diagram. Have students cut and paste the food item into their correct location. The clue word diagram also has the outcomes listed for cut and paste (pizza is needed to be used for the main course on this diagram). On the second diagram the outcomes must be written by the students. The students then make their own tree diagrams for the question about flipping a coin.
