Sports lend themselves to numerical and statistical analysis as well as providing a familiar subject for many students. Many of the problems relate to college, professional or Olympic sports teams or personal activities such as running around a track. There is a plan to add to these in many ways--one of them being to have HS students create rational functions based on historical data to help approximate the asymptotic limits of some well-known events (what will be the time that humans will NEVER reach for running the mile, for example).
The problems can be used for several purposes: as a question-of-the-day activity; to show the value of math when it comes to sports; to give to students who wish to do extra credit work.
