This assignment shows students how random samples drawn from the same population can look very different. Students use an Excel spreadsheet (provided, see screen shot) that includes 10 samples drawn from a population. One of the samples (the first one) must be completed by the student using Excel's Rand function. Students enhance skills in the use of computer functions by multiplying the random number by 100 and then using Excel's round function. The provided histogram automatically updates to give students a visualization of the sampled products (shoes). Students can press the F9 key and watch the randomized numbers change, which changes the sample, which changes the histogram. This is a great tool to facilitate discussion about samples and multiple samples.
