This lesson serves as an introduction to logarithms for upper elementary and middle school students.
It consists of two lessons. The first lesson is a reading about the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
The second lesson is an introduction to logarithms, using the Richter Scale as a starting point. After completing this lesson, the student will have a qualitative understanding of logarithms, will be able to estimate the logarithm of any number greater than 10, and will be able to compute the logarithm of any number using a calculator. The student will also understand the relationship between powers of ten and logarithms.
