Description

PURPOSE:

This activity allows your students a chance to showcase some creativity by designing their own sand castle using buckets with predetermined dimensions. They will then calculate volumes of each solid and the total castle volume.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

This product contains:

✏️ A 1-page exploration into calculating volume and drawing orthographic projections

✏️ Suggestions for best practices of instruction

✏️ Isometric Dot Paper for Perspective Drawings

✏️ Standard Dot Paper for Orthographic Projections

STORY:

When my students were learning the volume formulas for cylinders, cones and pyramids I was reminded of my days as a kid building sand castles on the beach. Then, I realized that the solids my students were studying were the same shapes of my pails of sand. Thus this activity was born.

POSSIBLE EXTENSIONS:

Two possible extensions are included in this file!

MATERIALS/PRE-REQS:

Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Describe the two-dimensional figures that result from slicing three-dimensional figures, as in plane sections of right rectangular prisms and right rectangular pyramids.
Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
