Santa Synonyms covers CCSS:

5.L.5.c- Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, homographs) to better understand each of the words.
Santa Synonyms is a holiday themed center and craftivity. With the advent of new state standards and increased rigor, all too often we are required to forego traditional elementary activities in order to teach with fidelity. I was given the idea to create this center by a 2nd grader (with whom I am profit sharing) and loved it.
In this center students are asked to match up synonyms in order to create their 10 Santa Clauses. Each Santa has 4 synonymous words that need to be matched- his hat, head, body, and legs are pieced together.
There are two follow-up worksheets that accompany the center. The first is a simple sheet that asks the students to list the words that they matched, so that you can assess their work. The second uses verses from "Twas the Night Before Christmas" (in Public Domain). Students are asked to replace underlined words within the poem with synonyms of their choice.
The craftivity combines synonyms and character traits. Students are asked to choose one character trait that best describes them and write it on Santa's Sleigh. They then need to find synonyms for their character trait and write them on a reindeer. Students then use yarn to create Santa's Synonym Sleigh.
