Students will love this Narrative Non-Fiction Mini Holiday Unit for David Sedaris's classic, "SantaLand Diaries" I designed this unit to go along with the transcript and audio version of the humorous essay David Sedaris did for the This American Life radio show and podcast on NPR. Sedaris details his time working as a Macy's Elf in SantaLand. This version is readily available for free online:
I suggest playing the audio for your students as they read along with the transcript.
If you have Sedaris's full "Santa Land Diaries" essay, this unit would also work.
This resource is suitable for 11th and 12th-grade classrooms. It might also work with some more mature 9th or 10th-grade students. Please review the text before purchasing to make sure it is right for your classroom.
The unit starts off with a journal activity and culminates with a first-person narrative prompt based on the journal. There is also a vocabulary and allusion guide, an active reading guide, a graphic organizer to keep track of imagery and descriptive language, and a post-reading reflection. Both a key and a rubric are provided.
The Santa Land Diaries unit covers several informational text reading and narrative writing standards.
