These carolers need to get a message to Santa ASAP but it is in secret code! Your students will have a blast decoding these solfa messages and giggle with delight after completing each interruptive challenge.
This is an all-inclusive SMARTBoard activity that challenges students to listen, look, and notate a solfa pattern ranging from 4 notes to 10 notes per example.
Students may work by themselves or with a partner to complete the listening task. At the end of each level the link goes back to the home page where a more challenging level can be attempted or repeated.
Multi-leveled: The activity begins with just 3 notes per listening example and goes all the way up to between 8-10 pitches per example. There are interactive opportunities for 8-10 different students per level. When a level is mastered, students are promoted in the Mailroom. (In my music room they get to hit the gong!) This feature is kid-tested fun!!
Customizable: The melodies (linked mp3 files) in this file are on 4 different pitch levels. The "Notes" in each example are locked but movable, so if you want to move do or work with a fixed do, you have that option.
so-mi and so-la are the melodic elements included in this file.
Training Video included: I have created/ linked a funky Solfege Decoding Training Video for students to watch before they begin or when they run into difficulty and need a few hints. This video was made with Chatterpix and iMovie and, in a unique way, really helps children see the movement from so - mi and so-la. The talking line and kissing space is unforgettable!
Built-in Breaks: Every now and then, a repair has to be made or something happens and students must follow directions to fix the problem with a fun, timed challenge. These challenges are designed to reinforce the melodic reading and writing and to create natural instruction opportunities during the lesson. The students love these challenges!
Built in motivation: As each page is entered, the red window is animated to close (slowly). Students will be challenged to hear the pattern on page one and quickly peek at the pattern when the page two is entered.
Over 100 interactive pages: This lesson has over 100 interactive pages and can be used over several class times. It is a time-saver because it's ready to go with enough variety and breaks built in to keep the attention of the most challenging little critters!
If you are looking for a fun and interactive way to reinforce so-mi and so-la (and a little bit of so-mi-do), then this SMARTBoard activity will be a great addition to your music resources.
My students rated this activity a "7" on the scale of 1-5 fun!!
Thanks for the great feedback and suggestions!
