Description

Are you looking for a way to reinforce essential skills in an engaging way that helps your students make connections? “Santa’s Workshop” is a ‘real-life’ math project where students will complete thirteen different tasks, each one focusing on using math skills in a real-life context. This project will help your students see how these concepts are used in real life. Additionally, it’s a great way to keep your students engaged throughout the chaotic days before the holidays!

You might choose to print specific tasks to use during math centers, or you might make a booklet out of all of the tasks and let your students choose which one to do when. The choice is yours.

Take a look at what you’ll find inside this math project:

TASK #1: TOY MAKING

The elves make thousands of toys every day in the workshop. Use the picture graph to figure out how many toys each elf made today.

Skills: picture graph, 1:5 correspondence, interpreting data

TASK #2: DECORATING THE TREE

It’s time to decorate the tree in Santa’s Workshop! Each of the pictures below represents 2 items. How many decorations are there?

Skills: skip-counting, word form, tally mark representation

TASK #3: ELF WORK TIMES

There are elves working all day and all night in Santa’s Workshop! The clocks below show when each elf’s shift begins. Write the times.

Skills: time to 5 minutes, ordering

TASK #4: COUNTING THE TOYS

Each array represents the number of toys. How many are there?

Skills: arrays (addition or multiplication),addition/subtraction, comparing, problem-solving

TASK #5: THE NICE LIST

Santa has looked through the Nice List and decided what each child will receive. Use the clues to figure it out.

TASK #6: EVEN OR ODD

Look at the numbers. Shade the even numbers RED and the odd numbers GREEN.

TASK #7: ELF JOKES

The elves at Santa’s Workshop love to laugh and tell funny jokes.

TASK #8: NORTH POLE PROBLEMS

There are always problems to solve at the North Pole!

TASK #9: CHRISTMAS DINNER

It’s almost Christmas and the elves are in charge of buying the supplies for the North Pole Christmas Dinner! Can you help them get everything they need?

TASK #10: WORKSHOP DESIGNS

Santa’s Workshop is being renovated! Can you help design the workshop layout?

TASK #11: LETTERS TO SANTA

Each day, a bag of letters is delivered to the North Pole from children around the world. Look at the letters that were delivered this week.

TASK #12: DECORATING THE WORKSHOP

It’s workshop decorating day! The base ten blocks represent the number of each decoration in the workshop.
