Product Description

This Sarah Hale Literature Guide is a unit about the life and legacy of Sarah Hale, the single mother of five, composer of Mary Had a Little Lamb, and first female magazine editor, who single handedly took on the task of having Thanksgiving declared a national holiday. This unit can stand alone with the accompanying story Sarah Saves Thanksgiving which is included in the packet, or can incorporate the picture books Thank You, Sarah!: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving, or Sarah Gives Thanks.

The purpose of this unit is to help students develop the skills of advanced readers in analyzing, interpreting and writing about informational narratives. The questions promote big ideas, themes, and concepts, and provide opportunities for students to question the author, analyze the author’s and illustrator’s craft, and make connections to self and the real world. Questions can also be used for journaling and require responses that go beyond the literal meanings or the answers found in the text as they invite analysis of character, events, and interactions; synthesis of ideas; and evaluation of relationships, actions, consequences, and alternatives.

There are more activities in this unit than you will want to do with your students. I have included activities to meet a wide range of language arts skills, ability levels, and learning styles. You know your own students, so pick the ones you feel would be the best fit for your classroom.

THE ACTIVITIES IN THIS UNIT COVER THE FOLLOWING SKILLS:

  • Comprehension
  • Summarizing
  • Comparing and Contrasting
  • Theme
  • Character Analysis
  • Fact and Opinion
  • Cause and Effect
  • Plot
  • Setting
  • Vocabulary
  • Opinion and Informational Writing
  • Analyzing quotes
