Practice reading comprehension and comparing and contrasting Pilgrim life and life today with the texts Samuel Eaton’s Day
and Sarah Morton’s Day
, written by Kate Waters. These historical books are perfect for teaching life long ago and today life in first, second, or third grade, and this resource is filled with comprehension and writing activities to accompany your reading.
(Please note that the books are not included and must be purchased separately.)
For each story, six comprehension strip questions
are provided, along with a recording sheet. Students will return to the text to find specific information as they answer the questions. These can be done individually or in pairs and work well in literacy centers. Black and white and colored versions are provided for your convenience. Be sure to provide copies of books for students to reference.
Three compare and contrast writing prompts
are also included. Each includes a Venn Diagram with two line options and writing response paper. Students will be asked to compare and contrast their own lives with those of Pilgrim children and compare and contrast the life of a Pilgrim girl to that of a Pilgrim boy.
An opinion writing prompt
and a creative writing prompt
are also included.
Writing prompts and recording sheets are provided on pages with and without handwriting lines. Choose the format that best fits the needs of your students.

*RI.1.3: Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.
*RI.1.9: Identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic (e.g., in illustrations, descriptions, or procedures).
*RI.2.9: Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.
*RI.3.9: Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic.
