This Sarah, Plain and Tall: Cast of Characters packet is a great supplement for your study of Patricia MacLachlan's novel, Sarah, Plain and Tall. I hope you find it to be a useful character analysis resource for your students. It has a variety of uses, including in literature circles, as independent study, homework, and/or to assess your students' understanding of the characters, etc.
The four main characters featured in this packet are Sarah Wheaton, Jacob Witting, Anna Witting, and Caleb Witting.
There are a variety of character analysis & graphic organizers, including:
•A graphic organizer that has students list the character's likes, dislikes, wishes, what he/she misses, what he/she is good at, and what he/she learns throughout the book.
•A graphic organizer that has students write words and/or phrases that describe each character.
•A “What I Know About...” worksheet that has students organize details about each character, in addition to locating evidence from the book.
•A “What's the Problem?” graphic organizer that asks students to explain one problem that each character faced and what the solution was.
•A “Character Bio” activity. Students are to pretend they are the casting director for a Sarah, Plain and Tall movie. They need to create a Character Bio based on a character of their choice from the book.
•A “Have You 'Scene' It?” activity. Students are to draw a picture from a scene in the book, incorporating at least two of the characters in their drawing. Students are also asked to add a caption that describes what is going on in the scene.
•A “Relating to a Character” activity. Students are to choose one character (either Sarah, Jacob, Anna, or Caleb) to compare themselves to. Afterwards, students can use a highlighter to mark what they have in common with the character.
You may choose to have your students do some or
all of these graphic organizers/activities, depending on your time and needs of the class.
