This PowerPoint was created as a pre-reading activity to introduce readers to Patricia MacLachlan's Sarah, Plain and Tall. Slides include photographs and/or illustrations of the following:
• Seacoast of Maine
• Seacoast marine and wildlife
• Midwest prairie
• Prairie farm animals and wildlife
• General store (circa mid-1800s)
• Farming on the prairie
• Modes of transportation (circa mid-1800s)
• Map of United States
After viewing these photographs, students will be better able to visualize and connect to story events. Also included is a map of the United States (teaching slide and student copy), so students can gain an understanding of the relative location of both Maine and the Midwest prairie states.
