In the late 1800’s, travel was very different than it is today.
In the story, Sarah, Plain and Tall, the characters used both steampowered trains and wagons to travel. Sarah and Papa exchanged letters, which also took weeks. The story mentions that a trip into town took a full day by wagon.
In this activity, students will analyze travel times through four different means – airplane, car, wagon, and train. Students will calculate how long the journey from Maine to Kansas would take using each method.
