Treaty Unit created for the Saskatchewan Curriculum. I made this for my grade 4 class; however, it has been and can be altered for older or younger grades. The unit has a 30 page slideshow to follow along for each lesson. The power point is not saved in PDF form so it can be altered or changed to suit your needs.
The unit includes lots of information to discuss the promises within the treaties and how they were broken. Most of the lessons open doors for debates and discussions which help students create deeper meaning. 5 of the lessons have worksheets with answer keys. There is also an optional test for the end of the unit.
Lesson 1: Promises & Contracts
Lesson 2: Mapping SK Treaties
Lesson 3: Why were Treaties made?
Lesson 4: Promises & Provisions
Lesson 5: Broken Promises
Lesson 6: Symbolism of Treaty Making
Lesson 7: Wrap Up Activities
You need access to the internet to watch two youtube videos. I also use three books in this unit (two would be optional#1&2)
1) A Promise is a Promise - Robert Muench (introductory set lesson- optional)
2) Shi-shi-etko (Nicola Campbell)- (used in Broken Promises to emphasize Residential Schools- but you can skip the book and just have a conversation)
3) The Legend of the White Buffalo Woman- Paul Goble (this book emphasizes the importance of a Pipe Ceremony).
