In this assignment, students use research skills and knowledge of satire to locate two texts that approach the same issue. Students compare and contrast the effectiveness of each text to determine who was more effective in meeting the needs of the issue at hand: the satirical writer or non-satirical writer.
Students indicate the authors' arguments, locate supporting evidence, determine tone, and develop their own position. While this lesson is intended for 11th grade, students in 10th and 12th are also likely to have the right skill-set to be successful on this assignment. Ultimately, this assignment assesses students' ability to analyze and evaluate satire as an effective mode of writing when applied to a current social/individual/political issue.
