By studying arguably the finest example of satire in world literature, students will develop new paradigms for understanding the society we live in. Students will imitate, comprehend, practice, apply, analyze, evaluate and invent satire while intellectually move into, through and beyond A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift (1729). Students will read, think, speak, write about and create satire. Students will independently research the author, and the time and place in which A Modest Proposal was written, almost 300 years ago. Students will develop and discuss their own satirical treatment of a current issue (the Trayvon Martin case), working both independently and in peer groups.
