Description

This item is INCLUDED in Savanna Safari: Maps, Mural, MiniMuseum (COMPLETE Bundle)

Bring the African savanna to your classroom with these self-checking Plants and Animals of the Savanna Study Cards and Sorting Mats. Students of all ages can learn about the natural resources of the African savanna with these realistic photographs and whimsical mats. They will help your students learn complex concepts about the plants and animals of the African savanna in short order. The five sorting mats isolate concepts such as animal classification and activity periods, plant adaptations, seasonal changes, and the different habitats found on the African savanna. They are pictured and placed side-by-side to help students identify characteristics and compare them. The sixty-four sorting cards represent 24 plants, and 40 animals. They can be sorted a variety of ways. I hope your students will enjoy these activities as much as mine did—they were very engaged!

Three levels of materials are included:
• preschool-first grade,
• grades 2-3, and
• grades 4-6

The cards may be used individually, or they may be sorted in different ways using the included Sorting Mats. There are 5 different mats in three levels (same as above). Titles include

Where Does it Live? Students place the cards to show in which habitat of the savanna the item lives.

Plant Adaptations (not available for preschool): Plant cards are sorted according to adaptations such as Defenses, Dormancy, Ability to Store Water, Small Leaves, and Special Roots.

Nocturnal or Diurnal: Animals are classified according to whether they are active at day or at night

Animal Sort: Animals are sorted according to classification as, Birds, Mammals, Amphibians, Reptiles, Arthropods

Seasons: Cards are sorted depending on which season they portray—wet or dry.

The sorting mats are ledger size (11X17 inches). The ledger size file can be printed onto ledger paper, if you have access to a large format printer. If not, the letter size file can be printed on 2 sheets of letter size paper (8.5X11 inches). Inside margins are trimmed and the two pieces are taped together on the back before laminating. Preparation directions are included so that classroom volunteers may make the items for you.

I'm sure you'll find these colorful mats, and realistic cards exciting and fun in your classroom science center or mini museum!
