Use this segmenting/blending activity to help students build phonics skills. Utilizing pictures gives students visual images that helps to build background knowledge. Onset Rimes (Word Families) are a great way to expose students to phonetic patterns and it helps to build spelling skills.
Students should say the picture first. Next, use magnetic letters or letter tiles to make the word. Then have them to write each word that matches the picture from the word family.
This helps students to read and solidify consonant and vowel sounds and identify chunks in words. This activity will also serve to help build student’s word recognition skills.
