"Say Something" Note Pass, inspired by the work of Kylene Beers, is a written structure that can be used to provoke student conversations. This structure leads the students through the process of making their own annotation and responding to two other annotations of classmates, with the ultimate goal being a synthesis.
When I used this, I modeled the responses first, and we had also practiced with using sentence frames to jump start our writing. Students loved the fact that they received responses to their writing- it was kind of like a surprise.
You can either have students write and then pass their papers to the left or right, or you can gather the papers after each round and distribute them randomly.
