Phoneme Segmentation is a technique for building phonemic awareness in which students break words into sounds saying each sound separately as they stretch out the word. Students with a strong phonemic awareness are much more likely to be successful readers.
For English Learners (EL), as well as all students, it is important that the words and sounds students are manipulating are familiar. ELs must have have knowledge of the English vocabulary words to understand their phonemes. Each card includes a picture so that you can teach phonemic awareness while also explicitly teaching vocabulary words, their meaning, and their pronunciation to your ELs.
These task cards help students hear and isolate three phoneme words. This set includes 43 cards (CVC Words with Pictures) with 3 phonemes. A key is included.
There are many different ways to use the task cards. Students can point to each circle with their finger as they stretch out the word or use hands-on manipulatives such as counters or playdough.
