This literacy center activity includes an explanation, image, interactive notebook sheet and matching game for 16 common proverbs.
Although this list is assigned to Year 2, in the Common Core, I think these sayings are useful for all ages, especially an ESL students.
Understanding that proverbs, sayings and idioms don't have a literal meaning is a huge step to improving reading comprehension and writing.
Once a student understands and becomes familiar with these sayings, he/she will be able to include examples in writing tasks successfully and confidently. This knowledge also improves comprehension, making students aware that literal meanings aren't always right.
There are 16 anchor charts or posters, which give students the saying; an explanation and an image to help them remember.
There are 3 sets of black ink cards; saying; image; explanation.
These cards are great for matching games in your literacy circles.
There is also a generic flap sheet for notebook writing and summary activity.
It is amazing to see and hear that not long after starting this unit, the students' writing, speech and conversation is littered with these proverbs!
There is an A4 version with Australian spelling included.
